Garcinia cambogia, also known simply as Garcinia, is known by a variety of other names including AHC, Malabar tamarind, hydroxycitric acid, and hydroxycitrate.

Two of the most common uses for Garcinia cambogia supplements are for weight loss and weight loss management and by exercisers or bodybuilders wishing to enhance their physical performance, endurance, and stamina.
It is believed that it may help to control appetite and reduce or even prevent fat storage, although human studies in this area are lacking.
While some research has been conducted on the positive effect of Garcinia on weight loss in those wishing to lose those last few stubborn pounds, little scientific evidence exists that the extract actually has the same effect on either energy performance or its ability to break down fat in overweight individuals.
Further studies are needed to determine the exact benefits and functions of the supplement in regard to people who are already overweight or obese.
Some interest has also been taken in its ability to lengthen duration of exercise in regard to stamina and endurance.
When the body doesn’t use up its stores of glucose, it’s converted into fat.
The main component found in the extract (HCA) is believed to prevent formation of fat by blocking the enzymes involved in its conversion. The body will then break down stored fat cells, increasing metabolism and providing faster fat burn.
In regard to exercise enhancement, one of the chemical compounds found in Garcinia cambogia is called hydroxycitric acid or HCA.
Hydroxycitric acid is also believed to increase levels of serotonin – “the happy hormone” found especially in the brain.
Serotonin has the ability to reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a sense of well-being that may reduce incidents of over eating caused by stress.
More specifically, HCA shows a positive ability to block production of a specific enzyme (adenosine triphosphate citrate-lyase), that is essential in converting unused glucose or energy (from carbohydrates) into fat.
Additional uses include oral use as an aid to rheumatism, severe diarrhea (dysentery) and to treat worms and parasites. Studies regarding long-term efficacy continue.
Long-term study results regarding potential safety or interactions with herbal remedies, synthetic or natural supplements have not been determined.
It is not yet known if it is bad for your liver.
For this reason, women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should avoid Garcinia cambogia extract and other herbal supplements due to lack of research regarding safety.
When used orally, the herbal supplement has been determined safe when used according to directions for no more than 12 weeks.

Recommendations regarding dosage of HCA range from 250 mg to 3,000 mg, again depending on use for exercise performance or weight loss.

Recommended dosage in milligrams may also differ depending on ingredients. To see effective results in weight loss, dosages of 1,600 mg daily are recommended. Again, keep in mind that the lower the level of HCA, the less active the ingredients will be.
It may be a good idea to select one that also contains some potassium and calcium; minerals not only beneficial for overall health, but for dieters who may be lacking essential nutrients in their diet while losing weight.
Opt for supplements from companies that have generated a solid reputation in producing high-quality products.
